I-80 goes to North Lake Tahoe.
Hwy-50 goes to South Lake Tahoe.
50 and 80 merge in Sacramento, so 80 goes all the way to San Francisco.
So from 80 you can exit right in W. Sacto to stay on 80 to North Lake. If you go straight 80 will turn into 50 as you pass downtown Sacramento. And you will be headed to S. Tahoe and the Casinos.

Well, Lake Tahoe is east of SF, so you'd approach the west side. You can go to the south or north shore. The south shore is closer.
You would take 80 to the north shore and 50 to the south shore.

welll..that entirely depends on final destination. if you are going to north shore, i.e. tahoe city, truckee, you would take highway 80 all the way up to there. if you need to go to south shore you would need to take highway 50 exit in sacramento.
tahoe's pretty easy to find, just follow the signs basically.
and if you get to reno as previous posted suggested, you missed tahoe.

What's your final destination? Basically you're going to arrive at the west/north shore if you go through Reno, south shore if you take 50.

If you follow I80 northeast you will need to exit onto CA Highway 89 to take you south to Lake Tahoe. (I80 misses Lake Tahoe and continues to Reno)
MapQuest directions and map:

A better route is to take I80 to Sacramento and then US50 all the way to South Lake Tahoe.
MapQuest search for this route:

On either search you can change the location address of the starting point or the destination.
