My best friend gets her music for her ipod on Limewire. Is that illegal? If so, how should I tell her without freaking her out? I'm just confused...

Piracy, is the name. So in all terms yes illegal. But also a security risk for her computer. Some file sharing software comes bundled with malware such as spyware or adware.

RIAA, uses the hacker tactic, which is also illegal.
To get user info. As for telling your friend. Since the legal issue is so iffy with her, I would focus more on the security issue.

downloading any copyrighted material (songs, movies, tv shows, audio books) without paying for them is almost always illegal. For more information go to RIAA.com they have lots of information there, including some heartwarming stories about how pirating scum (like your friend) have been prosecuted and payed thousands of dollars in fines. A great read.
