You're not going to get a clear answer on that. There are different 'schools'. One approach, the HIT approach is to basically do full body workouts, one set only, going almost to failure. For beginners this would be 3 times a week, then eventually twice a week and maybe less for 'huge' guys.

The more 'orthodox' school is to split into a few sessions, do multiple sets, and allow more recovery time.

The best answer I suppose is 'do what works for you'.
