You should have an attorney helping you, at the very least to protect your credit score. If the balance is only $1000, the bill should be paid off and the account closed. Also, notify the finance company after the account is closed, that this is an item of a divorce and for them to not reopen the account or another account. It would also be advisable to add a flag to your credit score. My ex was able to somehow open accounts after he left and ruined my credit. He may not seem like the type to do something like that, but it is batter to be safe than sorry.

If it is a joint account then you BOTH are responsible for paying it off. First I suggest you call the credit card company and cancel that card, then YOU pay half of the bill and HE pays half of the bill. If you don't cancel that card now HE can go out and charge a bunch of stuff that YOU will be responsible for paying on as well as him.

Unfortunately, the credit card account is in both names, so both are responsible for the debt.
Looking from a positive side, you only have one jointly account, it could've been worse.
1) If you have his card, cut it up, 2) pay it off, to keep your credit in tact, 3) after it is paid off, close the account.

Personally to make sure my credit stays in good standing I would pay the $1000. $1000 is nothing compared to bad credit. Then ask to close the account or have you name removed off of it.

get a new card with your name on it now. whoever gets the furniture should pay it off. once it is paid off close that account and tell him to open a new one also with just his name. do it soon or that will come back and bite you in the butt.

Best advice - don't quibble about small amounts of money. $1000 is nothing. Take steps to protect your credit. Be willing to negotiate and cave, if you have to, to protect yourself.

tell him you are going to pay it off and you want his name off of it or go talk to the people that are financing it im sure they would rather you pay it off and they give you good credit than have him default on it. .really its simple just talk to them and tell them what you want it will work out.
