During the last few years of the Clinton administration, the portion of the debt (referred to as Debt Held by the Public) declined. This is not the total debt, which still went up. I'm referring to that portion that went to investors like the Saudis.

Now imagine you are a bank (e.g. Saudis), giving out loans to many people (e.g. Federal Government). And you charge interest. What would happen to the interest payments you are receiving from these people if the amount of money you are giving out in loans is declining? The less money you loan out, the less interest payments you get. The profit you make comes from the interest payments. And the interest rate has to be large enough to cover inflation or increase the loan amounts (by giving out new loans) so that the interest payments you receive goes up every year.

Preferrably, you would want the interest payments (also known as profits) to go up every year, which means giving out more loans. For the government, it means bigger deficits.

During Clinton years, there was a double-whammy. Interest rates and debt declined. A declining debt means no deficit or what people referred to as a "surplus" during the last few Clinton years.

There is a financial reason for hating Clinton. Profits that feed off the backs of taxpayers were declining. Why wouldn't these people hate Clinton? They are making less money with Clinton as president.

Remember the big push to spend the "surplus"? They didn't want the debt to go down; they want it to go up.

When Bush Jr. took office, the first opportunity he had was to increase the deficit. Instead of surpluses that politicians were fighting over to spend; we were back to deficits. He ran up record-breaking deficits for years. It is like Bush is playing catchup, trying to make up for the lost profits of the Clinton years.

We as taxpayers are giving up $2000+ a year, each of us, to pay the interest on the debt. This is money that leaves your pocket then goes to someone else's pocket.

($300 billion interest payment divided by 150 million taxpayers = $2000 per taxpayer).

And we are only paying the interest. It is like you are paying an interest-only mortgage loan, except you weren't ask to pay it.

So, the first thing to do is to look for areas to cut spending. Instead of giving people lip service, make sacrifices and cut spending.

This is what Clinton did. And the cuts started the Clinton-hating. Clinton just didn't go after the "low-hanging fruit" of the small ticket items people call "pork". A few million here, a few million there might add up to several billion but the budget is multi-trillion dollar budget. He went after the big ticket items like military spending as this is where the sacrifices are really made. Big ticket items affects many people. More people means more hate.

Whoever is the next president, he or she will be hated for years if these big ticket item cuts are made. Right now, since the election is years away, ideas from the Democrats on where to cut spending is mighty scarce. Perhaps as the election draws closer, we might get more details on what they plan to do in regards to the deficit.

As for the Iraqi situation, what they need to do is look at Haiti. That is the other country the USA invaded, also for perceived financial gains. Just like now, roads were built, schools built, the works. If they had the internet in the early 1900s, the American people would be reading about these good deeds in real-time instead of reading about it decades later in history books.

But in the end, the country is a mess. It's been a mess for many decades now. And that is the only thing people see. The mess. Not the history that led to it. The Democrats would need to look closely at how Haiti was ruined and not duplicate those poor efforts. As the election draws near, perhaps we get to see whether the Democrats learned anything from history. Clearly, Bush didn't.

They won't have to worry about it, they'll turn the country over to Ayman Al Zawarhi and his acolytes.

Al Qaeda Sends a Message to Democrats
December 22, 2006 2:28 PM
Brian Ross and Hoda Osman Report:
Al Qaeda has sent a message to leaders of the Democratic party that credit for the defeat of congressional Republicans belongs to the terrorists.
December 22, 2006 2:28 PM
In a portion of the tape from al Qaeda No. 2 man, Ayman al Zawahri, made available only today, Zawahri says he has two messages for American Democrats.
"The first is that you aren't the ones who won the midterm elections, nor are the Republicans the ones who lost. Rather, the Mujahideen -- the Muslim Ummah's vanguard in Afghanistan and Iraq -- are the ones who won, and the American forces and their Crusader allies are the ones
Zawahri calls on the Democrats to negotiate with him and Osama bin Laden, not others in the Islamic world who Zawahri says cannot help.
"And if you don't refrain from the foolish American policy of backing Israel, occupying the lands of Islam and stealing the treasures of the Muslims, then await the same fate," he said.

they have no ideas or agenda, all they want is to get elected. Oh wait they do want to pull out of Iraq and then negotiate with the terrorists. Man what a good idea. Why didn't Bush think of that? I mean just negotiate with terrorists, explain to them that killing is wrong and just put your guns down and let's all drink some hot chocolate and eat some smores and sing songs. That would make everyone just feel so warm and fuzzy inside.

the poster right above me tells you where the conservative movements head is at right now.

with material things and not things of importance.

she speaks for them all.

but to answer your question. what can one do when the worlds been turned upside down on its head? the experts have already said that the repercussions of the usa invading iraq is gonna take at least 10 years to get past. so ask this question in 10 years. as of right now to much money has been promised to to many people-and we all know that if they don't get their money they'll sue or find some way of getting it (i'm speaking on the military and many contracting companies in iraq)

internationally-china and a few other countries are about to pass the usa in just about everything-from economics to population-so in 20 years the usa won't be much of a power no matter what they try to do (that's coming from the head of the WORLD BANK) that problem can't be changed (unless the usa bombs the whole world..and they aren't ABOVE THAT)

nationally. one can stop all the hate mongering and finger pointing the republican spin machine has started (it was their plan once they seen they were losing control-ie-illegal immagrants-while companies do nothing but outsource-building a wall to keep people out-even though the usa cheered the fall of the berlin wall-irony?)...how do they stop it? don't know-but they are gonna have to try some how.

anyway-decent question- you won't get many mature answers though.

ps: when i wrote this jnwom was above me. so i don't mean the fool above me now.

I do believe that the dems will still be on the sidelines trying to distract from the next president's agenda (McCain), just like they have for 20 out of the last 28 years. The only time they weren't crying was when slick willy was doing his thing (in the oval office).

As far as "cleaning up", I hope bill washed up before spreading anything to his wife / mistress / intern / girlfriend / hooker / secretary / neighbor or anybody else he did not have sexual relations with.

Its like cleaning up a major population center after a Category 5 hurricane hit it. It is going to take a huge effort by the best minds the country can offer.

The economy is held together by massive deficit spending, every other country hates us, were in a quagmire in the middle east. It doesnt get much worse than that.

Oh gosh, what a mess! I guess they can start by bringing the troops home, and using what is left if congress okays Bush's wild spending spree to clean up and rebuild Louisiana and Mississippi. Then focusing on programs for the average person which is where our tax dollars should be spent.

Hillary will have to go to the Hardware Store and buy a very large street broom and just start sweeping away all the dirt that George has left behind. It ain't gonna be easy. Oh I forgot, repubs are blaming all this mess ( WAR ) that we are in on Clinton, Yeah, he started it after he left office. One day he called up the military and said, I used to be the Prez, hit that Iraq with all you got.
