Maybe you have an idea of what the word really means---it is a word used out of context--sounds silly when heard by people not in your age group--you must be young. Love is for adults who respect, care, tolerate, and truly find partnership on an emotional level. So just say you value their friendship---yeah guys-see you later.

When you say it to one person, it feels more intimate and "mushy." My ex-best friend used to say "I love you" to me too and even though I felt the same way, I could never say it back (at least not in person or without muttering). I don't know why I can say it to my boyfriend very easily but not female friends. Maybe you're afraid of that sort of intimacy or at least expressing it. How about writing the words in a card during a holiday so it doesn't feel as threatening? Saying you love them in a group just feels like something casual that people say all the time. It's tough and it doesn't necessarily get easier as you get older. I think when the chips are down and you're in a natural situation, the words will just come out one day. Just don't push it yet if you're not comfortable.

it's a very intimate thing, whether it's romantic, or to a parent for example. Some people think of it as the MOST IMPORTANT think you could ever say, like in the movies when someone dies and then someone says they missed their chance to tell them how they feel. If you truly feel that you mean it and want to say it, then do, and it will get easier as time goes on. But don't just say it becuase they are.
