does this feature in automobiles conserve gasoline or waste it?

I would assume that it conserves gas, since it only uses the minute amount needed to overcome inertia.

If you are on the interstate it would conserve gas since it is mostly straight and level, but on off roads it would not conserve as much gasoline since it has to adjust for hills and curves.
