As a vet tech, you are basically an assistant to the vet, you will assist in surgery, give animals vaccines, fluids (set animals up on IV drips), injections, perform animal dentistries, run lab tests, fecal samples, hold animals while dr. is treating them, interact with owners, give owners instructions on care of pets, take x-rays of pets, take blood samples from pets, fill prescriptions, and also some paperwork is involved , pet records, etc. Depending on who you work for, you may also have to perform kennel duties: cleaning cages, feeding pets, etc.

In our state, it takes 2 years of technical school to be a vet tech. Part of the schooling is summertime internships at a veterinary hospital. Post schooling, there is state board test. If passed, the technician receives their certification (CVT) Some "technicians" are job trained. They have the skills to intubate, draw blood, vaccinate, take and develop radiographs, etc. They do not, however, have the medical background to understand the physiology of what they are doing. Vet techs are not allowed to determine prescription dosing. That can only be done by a licensed veterinarian. The word you are looking for is OVARIOHYSTERECTOMY. It means the removal of the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. Remember that online you can be anyone you want to be because you don't have to substantiate it. Always check answers with a professional you trust. Call you vet, asked to speak to or leave a message for a certified tech. They should be able to confirm what you are told.

I'm not sure, but I bet you could find out all of the information you need by calling the college and asking to speak with a counselor. I know they have a two-year program here for becoming a vet tech. Good luck!

How much the vet lets you do depends. some vets really don't know how much techs can do and just have them hold animals and clean cages (more of vet assistant jobs). But if you get a job working for a good vet or a large vet hospital you get to take histories on animals, make basic health care recommendations to clients before they see the vet, draw blood, place catheters, call owners to check up on pet issues, monitor anaesthsia, assist in surgery, preform dental cleanings, monitor animals in the hosptial, take x-rays, mediacate animals in the hospital, ect. Crappy parts of the job may include confronting unhappy clients, dealing with people who dont' want to pay, gettting bitten/scratched, cleaning up vomit and poop, doing anal gland. Overall it is a very rewarding job.

The above posters described pretty much what techs do, basically we are nurses for vets. Its not the best paying job, but I think its highly rewarding. In the US you can go for either a 2 year or 4 year degree to obtain your liscence, and then you can do more personal study to sit for any of the specialty boards (tests)(emergency, surgery, anesthesia etc).

the program is two years then you take a state board test to get your license. As a vet tech you take blood, clean teeth, assist in surgery, put in IV's, take temp, assist vet in exam room, take exrays, prep instruments for surgery. almost everything a vet does.

Vet techs (to put it simply) do all the dirty work for vets. They weigh pets, hold pets when they need shots, greet people, look at files and samples, stuff like that.
However, they graduate much sooner, although they are paid less.
