I am extremely busy and can't volunteer, but what are some other ways? I was thinking about giving money, food, that sort of thing, but what else? Please help.
(I am typing this for my 6th-grader friend since I am a much better typer than her)

Food is sometimes not appreciated if the shelter has a standard diet they maintain and the food you buy is different:
Money is always good. But to make it worth more, I suggest your friend calls her nearest shelter and asks them what is on their Wish List - most will have one and tell her of something they really need. Then she can give that item, or donate towards it, knowing that her help is going where it is most needed would surely give her the most satisfaction.

Donating money is always a good thing. Shelters are always in need of toys leashes and collars. Food is hard to donate because sometimes the shelters already get food directly from the suppliers. You could ask if there was anything that they needed. You could also try to educate people about the shelters. A lot of shelters in my area host walks to raise money for their shelter. This is good if you only can volunteer occasionally as well as a good fund raiser idea as well. You can get people to sponsor you to walk. Another thing you could do is help to educate your friends and family. And if you have a dog or cat or other small animal, have them spayed or neutered. That is the biggest help of all.

YOU HAVE ALREADY GOT SOME SUPER SUGGESTIONS!! actually I work at a shelter and its so true that the public needs to be aware of the importance of spay and neutre so many kittens and puppies are born and are unwanted. These animals end up in a shelter and we try hard to find them homes, we have a mobile adoption unit that we take out to the local shopping malls, and we have people volunteer to walk the dogs and try to find homes we do pretty good on it, but still spay and neutre is the only solution to the pet over population that we face, like everyone else saids blankets, towels, toys, and newspapers are all useful in a shelter we have a friends of animals program which is a money fund for spay/neutre for shelter animals being adopted. one ideal you may want to speak with your parents first, we have some kids that have birthday parties and instead of presents they donate money to the friends of animals program this is always a help, thank you for thinking of the homeless animals!!!! BLESS YOU!!!!!!!

Giving money and supplies always helps. Another good way is to spread the word so maybe someone you know wanting a pet would consider adopting before buying from a breeder/pet store. Also, if your family is interested you could foster a shelter animal until they find a permanent home. Hope this helps!

You could get a big box & put it in a public place to collect dog food/cat food, blankets, toys, towels; you could collect things in your school in a box like above listed (you would only need to pick this box up once a month); you could get flyers out re: adopt a pet from an animal shelter first, before buying a pet; get brochures from the shelters and/or rescues and pass them out at places you go (meetings, rallys, etc)

Continue being the caring person that you are, spreading the word to kids and teens about the love for animals is a great way to let people know how much you care. Always have your eyes open for someone abusing animals in front of you, and then put their little lives into your hands and report them for animal cruelty. Express to people who do not really care for animals how important having an animal can be. They love you unconditionally regardless of what you do, all they want from you is love, caring and understanding. I wish there were more people like you in this world, it would be a much happier place

They always need things like newspapers, old towels and blankets in shelters. Perhaps you can collect things like that from your friend's families?

Also, some shelter collect aluminum cans for $$. You can collect cans for them, but find out first if they do that.

And educate yourself about dogs to educate your friends. Every unwanted litter of puppies or kitties that is prevented saves thousands of lives, eventually. Educate everyone you know to spay and neuter puppies and kitties.

Even volunteering one day a month is something.

Otherwise, you could donate money and supplies, have bumper stickers and literature available to tell people about the shelter.

Try convincing others to adopt these animals, and those already with pet,try to convince them to get the pets "fixed".Most of those animals are either unwanted pets that were abandoned or offspring that the owners didn't want from the litter they couldn't get rid of.Donations are accepted, but the real answer is to educate pet owners.
