Reading these questions and answers, I estimate (albeit not scientifically) that about 80 to 90% of people posting here are poor spellers (not to mention grammatically challanged). Is it because they can't, or because they don't care? After all, there is a spell checking function readily available.....

Many people here are either just using internet chat lingo or just plain bad spellers, that's all.

One thing about your question ......... (not to mention grammatically challanged)<<< It is spelled CHALLENGED !!!

See, that is one typing error, I sincerely hope :)

Many people spell and use YOUR when it should be YOU'RE
meaning ''you are''........ duh!!!
And, that is NOT a typing error on their part.

Also, see how I spelled ''on their part'' when so many people would spell it like ''on THERE part''.........my, my, what do your English teachers actually teach you?!!!

English is not my first (native) language but I know, so come on, people, spell correctly when you should !! I never use the Spell Checker in anything.
Having said all that, I do understand when chat lingo is used.
That is fine with me.........except the YOUR and THERE.

It is alright with me if I can really read the question asked even if it has grammatical errors due to typing or poor spelling, simply because Yahoo is international. I do give an applause to the non-English speaking people for making an effort in the language. :)
Thank-you.

I normally am very careful about my spelling and punctuation but in Yahoo Answers I would not feel it necessary to run the spell checker. I always reread my input and correct anything glaring but I feel it is more important to give my feedback than to worry about typos where I would consider it unimportant. That doesn't mean I don't care or that I'm a bad speller. It means that I do have a life and I'm taking time out to provide an answer because I feel that I can state clearly my viewpoints and have the knowledge to back me up. I am a poor typist with severe arthritis but I am a knowledgeable person. My mistakes when they occur are often caused by my Fibromyalgia, a disease noted for causing what is referred to as "brain fog" or "fibro fog." I just ran the spell checker and it suggested that I should change fibromyalgia to fibreglass and fobro to fibre.

It does annoy me when people do not spell correctly. I think most people these days don't care. However, what annoys me more is the number of people requesting "help" for homework who do not put in the effort to try and solve it themselves. If they showed some attempt in answering the question and got stuck on a specific part of the problem, and could articulate the exact point where their knowledge fails them, then I have more time for them. When they just post the textbook question in the subject header, that says to me, "you're going to fail anyway, so why bother helping you".

I think that they all just don't care, because they're probably in a rush or they really don't care.

Even though they see a spell check, they probably forget about it and are trying to remember as much information as they can if they're asking a question, and try to type as fast as they can if they know their answer is right so they will most likely get the extra points.

i agree - i can't take a person seriously if they have obvious errors or use slang spelling. i actually try to avoid answering questions that have an error in the first line. don't people care about how they present themselves?

but then again...i hate to capitalize letters, so people may be thinking the same thing about me...

Dew knot mine.

Seriously, unless the atrocious spelling intrudes on the ability to read the question, I let it slide by

My guess is that carelessness is the cause of poor spelling. Lack of grammar knowledge explains those errors.

I obsessively check my spelling, actually. I hate typos and blatant mistakes.

In answer to your question, no one seems to care about good grammar.
