the size of the hole varies. it goes by gauge, and the smaller the gauge, the larger the jewelry (for instance, 14g is the average tongue ring size .... 10g is bigger than that but not much..0g is pretty freaking big). Usually people stretch their ears out gradually, and yes, it does hurt. If you stay under a certain size then the holes will shrink back down over time, but once you get too big, the holes will never go all the way back to their original size again.
I have 6g plugs in right now (the hole in my ear is about the size of a pencil eraser, maybe a little smaller) when I take them out, it takes a couple weeks but they shrink right back down to normal size again. I've heard you can go as big as 2g and they'll still shrink down. However those people who have the holes that you could fit your fist through, those wont ever shrink back down.
heres a picture of 6g lobes, the size I have. you can go that big and still take them out and have them go down to normal size

this person probably wont ever be able to get their ear holes back down to normal size, but the holes wont stay too huge if they take the jewelry out.

It is possible to get bad wire or bad spark plugs or the wrong spark plugs. It is not that common through, it is more common to get the wrong spark plugs or mix up the spark plug wires. But you can not miss wire just one spark plug wire, and with the coil packs per cylinder one would really have to work to miss wire it. So I am assuming that you have a Ford Explorer with a rotary distributor, and either a 6 or 8 cylinder engine. Tell your husband the problem and have him recheck his work. Get out your owners manual and make sure you have the right spark plug for your vehicle. Verify that the spark plugs are proper and securely fitted, that the spark plug wires are securely fitted, and that the wires are wired to the right plug. depending on what year of ford you have this should be very easy to do but you will have to know the firing order. Get a repair manual from the library or look it up via the Internet normally the firing order will have a diagram that show how the spark plug wire run. If all seems in order or this is beyond our ability then visit a reputable garage or ford dealership. You do not want to drive if avoidable, you may cause more severe damage. Best of Luck

first thing you ave to remember about peircings is the smaller the number the bigger the hole. the largest peircing or plug I have seen was a dubble 0 and yes when you take it out the hole will remain meaing once you streach it out it will be that size forever unless you correct it with surgery. and when the plug is not in place the remainging skin will just kinda dangle there. but that is only if you streach it out something akin to enormiously large a small plug will not make anything look so drasticly ugly, but as i said once you streach it out you cant shrink it back

Any hole in your body is going to hurt and yes the holes are permanent. They have to be surgically repaired.

Yeah, and they keep getting weirder and weirder and weirder. Just put the plug, where the sun don't shine, as Archie use to say. Then we in the normal world won't have to laugh at the freakish sights.
