Is it safe to dye my hair while pregnant?
There are conflicting reports about the safety of hair dye during pregnancy: Several studies found no ill effects on pregnant rodents given 100 times the typical human dose of these products, whereas British researchers reported chromosome damage among women who dyed their hair. Although this study was not conducted on pregnant women, this finding suggests that there may be some risk to coloring your hair while pregnant.

As a precaution, some physicians advise you to avoid hair color until after your first trimester (the period when your baby's vital organs, head, body and limbs form). Colorants made from vegetable dyes such as henna are preferable to the chemical dyes used in permanent and semi-permanent formulas. Recent studies indicate that hair dyes contain relatively high levels of bio-available lead acetate that can be harmful to the fetus, particularly the nervous system and brain. Check the product label and avoid lead based hair products.

They used to think that chemicals in the dyes soaked through your scalp and reached the baby. Completely false. Now, though, the only danger is the fumes from dyes with ammonia. If you keep the room well-ventilated (or better yet, use an ammonia-free dye), there won't be any side-effects. But if the fumes are giving you a headache, it's because you aren't getting enough oxygen, so they may be harming the baby as well. PLUS, like a bunch of people above have said, your hormones make the color come out a little different than usual sometimes. Just play it safe and use ammonia-free hair dye in a room with the windows open and the fan going, and you and baby will be fine.

In the past, hair dye has different chemicals in it, that could harm the unborn baby. These days it is not a concern. The makeup of the dyes are less harmful (if at all) now. I asked my doc about this and she said that it was perfectly fine for me to dye my hair. She just cautioned me to do it less often (every 1 1/2 to 2 months). Have fun. My husband wanted to help me with this last time, half my hair is blonde and half red (almost purple). That's the last time I let him help OR pick out the color! Good Luck!

Its so confusing sometimes being pregnant. I have heard all the pro's and cons of dyeing hair. But I think the safest bet would be to wait until your out of your first trimester before dyeing. Thats when the babies vital organs are developing and I wouldn't want anything to happen that might cause birth defects. Good luck.

I think that is just an old wives tale, I don't think there is any evidence to suggest that dyeing your hair is bad for you when pregnant. I would ask your hair-dresser to see what their opinion is on this.

you arent supposed to because of the chemicals... the toxins in the dyes are not good for you to be breathing especially while pregnant... Besides... If you are pregnant, and dying your hair, the color will most definatly not turn out how you wanted it to... before I knew all this i tried putting blonde streaks in my hair and they turned out bright orange...I tried to correct it... kept turning out orange...has something to do with hormones and stuff.

My doctor told me that there is absolutely no problem dying my hair. I only did it once. Even though my doctor told me it was perfectly fine, I dicided to dye my hair close to my baby shower/delivery date. I didn't wanted to abuse. But it is ok :).

It is not recommended because the chemicals can be absorbed into your system and ultimately may affect the baby -- and further, you may get inaccurate results due to the hormone changes.
