I am out of my 20's now. I really dont mind youth hostels, except that now there seems that many people are very young to me. I like the cheapness of them, and also it is nice to meet people . I think it is nicer to be able to save that money for more time traveling. and I dont care about staying in my hotel anyway.
It is really the only affordable way for me to travel for a long time in Europe (especially Western).
But it does seem like I am outgrowing people that stay there.
Asia and third world countries I can afford to travel a long time and stay in nice hotel rooms and you many are still kind of run like youth hostels. (One of the really nice things to traveling in places like Southeast Asia)
So what is your opinion about how old is too old to stay in youth hostels?
I get kind of the feeling that some of them dont want somebody older staying there now.

I,m 48,and i,ve stayed in many hostels, its a place to sleep and wash, thats all you need. No regrets. I do agree that some hostels are full of young excited travellers, and the volume can get a bit much. At the end of the day, i look for cheap places to stay, and i do alot of european countries. Next on the list is Slovakia, .....and later a 2 week look around Sardinia/Italy.

I don't think there really is a general upper age limit, though some individual hostels may limit by age during busy periods. I have met folks in their 50s and 60s staying at Youth Hostels as part of their hiking/mountain walking holidays and everyone seems to get along just fine.

UK youth hostel? Normal. Backpacking hostels, worldwide? It's normal too. 40+ is very common (they have the money to travel and gap years for the over forties are increasingly popular). You can get plenty of info on backpacking hostels before booking (some are more geared to nightlife than others). I tend to book the first night and see how it goes.

There is no upper age limit. I'm 33 and stay in youth hostels (and have been staying in youth hostels since I was a teenager). I have met a couple of people in their late sixties staying in youth hostels (one in the UK Lake District and the other in Lima).

Hey. youth is in the heart! If you feel young then you will carry a young presence around you. All my friends are around ten years younger than me, I'm 37. But if you feel uncomfortable then you are probably putting off an older vibe, and they sense it.
