I have a dell latitude d400 that doesn't have a cd drive. Is it possible to load an OS on the system using an external CD/DVD drive. I tried the ctrl + F11 that was suggested to me but I couldn't seem to get that command to work.

So all will be ok with the usb drivers through the formatting and installation process? I guess what i'm asking is will the laptop continue to recognize the usb port through the entire installation?

You can use an external CD drive or network installation provided your BIOS was set to boot from either.

Hmm. I'm not sure. You see, the external CD drive connects to the laptop via USB. I believe CD Drive will only boot windows if its an IDE or SCSI drive.

If you can communicate in any fashion with another computer which has a CD drive you can copy the Windows distribution to your hard drive and then install.
Do you have an older windows already on the laptop?

Yes external cd/dwd drive would be your best bet or if you have USB port you could ask somebody to copy cd/dvd to usb drive and hopefully laptop would be able to boot from it .

Yes, you can boot from USB devices (thumbdrives, usb optical drives, hard drives, etc).

You need to enable it in the bios of your laptop. Reboot and continue to press F12 to get you to the Boot options. With this you should get into the BIOS settings of your laptop so that you can enable USB booting.
