Every empire has it golden era, which usually change by a century or two. The19th century was England's, the 20th was USA's... the 21st century will either be China's or India. The USA had its fun, and now it's sinking slowly (?) in decay.
The USA is now so deeply infested by illegal immigrants (not just Mexicans, do you know how many illegal Iranians, Russians and Pakistani are there? three times more). The USA will turn completely Muslim in 20-30 years - then I'd like you to ask that question again. By that time China (which has 4 times the population of the USA) would have turned into the greatest economic and military power in the world.

You will have to define your idea of "greatest country" ... in what areas are we talking? I am sure that people in other countries feel "their" country is the greatest country in the world.
If anything can be said about the United States it is that in addition to have a diverse population there is an element of the population who have an ego bigger than the state of Texas ... but if you believe that a country should be known by its behavior among the World of other Nations, then, I would have to say: NO we are not by a long shot the "greatest" country in the world.
How many times have you heard, for instance, of the Nation of Portugal invading a sovereign nation and killing innocent women and children, merely because they didn't approve of that nation's leader?
Have you ever heard of the Duchy of Luxemborg putting a standing army on the border of its neighbors and threatening to bomb and straif them with weapons of murderous destruction, unless that country becomes a part of Luxemborg?
Have you in your lifetime, seen the Nation of France, marching across the border and invading Germany simply because they hated what germany did to France in World War II and thought it was time to teach them a lesson?
If you can answer yes to any of these questions, then, perhaps you can compare the nation of the United States to other nations, and decide which is the "greatest" ...
It is all subjective.

the USA is so far from being the greatest country its laughable.
look into other countries like Canada or Sweden or Norway or wow many others . total medical care free for all . top quality education . less crime by a huge margin. less tax . no war in some places for over 100 years. no one living on the streets.
far better pollution control . better military. yes much better Sweden for instants is a fortress. the USA is a crime infested over taxed place that is hated by many and not liked by most .
you are known as a people that cant see for yourself and instead buy any crap that your government tells you . such as the Iraq war that was all bull . Canada told you that . the UN did . most of the top ten coUNtries as listed by the un told America that the Iraq did not have the weapons but here you are in a war that is not winnable. this is the second time in less then 50 years you fell for that . better no the best light years worse. take a look around and don't buy that patriot crap. think for yourself.

Yes, we are likely the greatest country. However greatness doeesn't mean we should force our democracy down others throats.
While I am not a pyschologist or social scientist, I suspect democracy is best earned, and can't be handed to people.

Yes, in all of human history too. I am not American, neither do I live in the USA. Yet I will rather live under an American hegemony (bad as that is) than say Persian, Byzantine, Barbarian (past) or Russian, Germany, Chinese, Iranian or even British (modern)
