Some friends who live in Austrailia are going to swap care packages with my husband and I. We want to include things that they would not otherwise get to experience....any ideas? We are from Southern Mississippi if that helps.
Our ideas so far are:
-Saturday Night Live dvds
-Barqs rootbeer
-Keebler cookies
- Moonpies
-Mardi Gras beads
-Grits
We know that they have never had the things listed....we just wanted a few more items to include.

-Perhaps a magazine or book that captures the American culture, or the Southern Mississippi culture.
-American coins or bills may also be interesting (I know when I've visited other countries, I collect them).
-Perhaps a postage stamp.
-A calander that details the seasons may also be interesting, since their seasons are the opposite of ours.
-A mix CD of popular songs
-an assortment of candy bars

I did something similar, but I delivered it in person, so it may not be legal. But get a pint of 180-190 proof grain alcohol, steam off the tax stamp. Pour the contents into a nylgene bottle. Seal it well, and then put the tax stamp on the lid, then seal the top with duct tape. Tell them it's moonshine! It tastes the same and won't poison you like some local shine can.

How about packaging it in Spanish Moss. Make sure you sterilize it first. That way it won't grow there.

It would be great if you could put a couple of RC colas to wash down those Moon Pies.

I wish more people had friends in other countries and did the same.

Have fun!!!

My Granny was from Mississippi and my mother moved back years ago. Being born and raised in California when I visit I always look forward to REAL southern cooking - cornbread, cornbread dressing, chicken and dumplings, eating at Cracker Barrel, goo goo clusters, pecans, pecan pralines, sweet tea (or the option when you order, LOL), ribbon cane syrup, Dr. Pepper, salt pork, black eyed peas, okra, and my granny's biscuits... mmmmm. I think I'm gonna have to cry or buy a plane ticket. :)

I suggest a trip to Cracker Barrel's gift shop and a buttermilk cornbread mix (self-risin', of course) with some recipes. Tell them they'll just have to visit to experience how southern hospitality really warms the soul. :)

What a fun experience - enjoy!

My husband has been deployed twice now and getting ready to deploy again. When he is gone I send him things like packets of gatorade, snacks that he likes and can't get, magazines (not porn because they have taken it away in the past), new socks and foot powder, playing cards, I'd also bake cookies for him (a little taste of home). You know what he likes best and what will make him feel like home.

Check before sending foodstuffs in the mail. We have very strict customs regulations and things will be opened and maybe confiscated with your friends here, possibly getting into trouble. Check with USPost first
