Depending on when your prom is, you should have time to earn some money so you can spend more on a dress. If you're old enough, get a job. If you get an allowance, save it until you have enough to buy a more expensive dress. If you search hard enough, you may be able to find a dress for less than $60. My prom dress was originally $140, but I got it on clearance for less than $50. You need to shop around for deals... you'll find something.

So find an upscale resale or consignment shop that specializes in bridal gowns and other formal wear.....you should be able to find something suitable and chances are it was only worn once. No one will guess your secret and you'll save 100s. Your mom isn't trippin' she is trying to prepare you for responsible adulthood. Read "Confessions of a Shopaholic" by Sophie Kinsella if you want to know how shallow it is to live and die by fashion trends and want the best of everything. Then grow up a little.

How old are you? Old enough to pick up a part time job and help pay for a dress.
It will make you feel better about yourself as a person that you bought it with your money not mommiess
You know mommie wont be there for you forever. Learn to stand on your own 2 feet start small while you can.
Learn to be a proud strong woman who can make it on her own...........yea your young now but small steps start the way

$60 shouldn't stand in the way of a once in a lifetime opportunity. There are a couple things you might suggest:
1) Tell her you will find one that suits her style approval.
2) Find other occasions for which you could use the dress after the prom instead of a one-time fling..
3) Tell her you will help pay for it or pay her back in full.

Work odd jobs for money and buy it yourself. Your parents are NOT required to buy you a prom dress at all, much less an expensive dress you're only going to wear once. Start showing some adult characteristics and buy the dress yourself.

As you will learn when you get older and much more mature things in life do not come for free. Get a job and work for what you want like the rest of us do!

Um, first I'd smack my daughter in the mouth if she reacted like that to a price limit, and then I'd tell her to wear whatever is in her sister's closet.
Second, I'm sure you have consignment shops near you. usually they have good quality hand-me-down that you can alter to satisfy your own taste, for a decent charge.
I had a gorgeous prom dress that cost $50, and it wasn't that long ago either.

Uhhh....maybe she can't afford it!!! And maybe you should be less selfish and go get a job. Buy it with your money, and see what you are willing to spend on a dress you will wear ONCE.
Now go have a cookie!
