A good short story that I have read and made me think alot is After Twenty Years by O'Henry.

It's about two people who decide to meet after twenty years at this one spot while 1 friend goes out West to make his fortune. Here's a link to the short story...

Jack London's "To Build A Fire" is one of the greatest short stories of North American literature. When it was first published, it had critics on both sides of the Atlantic praising it for its brutal direct feel. London was able to create almost an entire genre of literature from this story.

Take a glance at this. Don't "buddy up" and just listen to your friend on what to read.

Geesh...there's so many good ones, but I'll pick two from the classics. I would say either Ernest Hemingway's "The Snows of Kilamanjaro," or William Faulkner's "Barn Burning."
