what type of repairs are neccessary to broken water main pipes when they burst? please specify

the water "main" is in the street---if you have a broken water main in your street or see water bubbling up thru the pavement, UNLESS you WORK for the city, you're not responsible for fixing it--call your Water or Streets department asap!

If you mean for burst pipes in your house, well you need to shut off the water at the main intake valve (usually in your basement or along a wall) and then you can replace the pipes (if you're handy) OR call a plumber.

What ever type of pipe you have, the burst part has to be cut out and new pieces installed. You could have galvanized pipe (if the house is old), you could have copper, or cpvc (plastic)
