I have a C230 sport, the 6 speed. I have many friends who do not believe two things: the first is the amount I paid for it (less than they paid for their Accords or Camrys) and the quality and reliability I get. Let me explain. I bought my car through an internet site and I paid thousands less than the MSRP. Another thing is that, as you might know, Mercedes Benz cars have free roadside assistance no matter who drives it or where you are (free jump starts, gas, flat tire, etc). I am 30 something and this is my 6th Mercedes car; but it is the first one that I have gotten brand new. I've gone from the small 190e, to the huge 560sel and I still hold dearly to a diesel that is getting close to the 1/2 million miles mark. You will certainly find people who disagree, (the patriotic ones who buy American cars regarless and criticize any foreign makes, specially German) but you cannot deny the craftsmanship and top of the line engineering MB offers. I am a very picky driver and as far as handling, comfort, looks, quality, response. Let me tell you: don't even compare a MB to a Honda or Toyota or even a Nissan, a fairer comparison is with a Lexus, infinity, of Acura, but just listen to the sound of the door as you close it. Would you buy a casio watch instead of a Rolex? Well, may be not a Rolex, but a Tag Heuer. One thing of advice: even though MB service at the dealer is great (they treat you like a movie star), the price for repairs there is ridiculous. My advice is to take it only for warranty service. Oil change is every 13,000 and this was the other amazement of my friends. Be aware that you are interested in the lower end of the scale of the MB line and don't expect 400+ horsepower from this babies. If you want to spend 80k+ then you are talking the AMG package and I don't think that's your interest. In conclusion, buy a mustang for half the price to get 'brute force' but if you want elegance, distinction, smoothness, and are a trendsetter, then buy a MB.

I have a 2006 280C which I bought new a year ago and so far did not have a single problem. In general I'm pleased with the performance, handling, ride and quality. The car has some short comings such as no fold up side view mirrors and fold up rear seats are extra. Also huge amounts of break dust on the front
wheels even with gentle breaking. Both the radio and lights are overly complex. Plenty of power for an average driver and the seats are comfortable. The AC works well.

Acceleration is just average. It's not a sports car, unless you're talking the AMG models.

It's pretty comfortable, altho the AMG model is the most comfortable surprisingly.

Handling is pretty bad, again, except for the AMG model.

Fairly practical I suppose. It's your average compact car.

Fit and finish isn't bad.

Reliability is the C-class's main problem area (as is many of the recent Mercedes).

Mercedes, for whatever reason, really cut back on their quality in recent years. This has been borne out by their horrible JD Power ratings.

If you're looking at an out of warranty car, I'd highly recommend against it. German parts are expensive. Throw in the fact that you're talking about a time period of bad reliability, and it's a recipe for disaster.

I'd hope the person above got his car for thousands less than MSRP. The C-class routinely goes for $1000 UNDER invoice or more. I just checked the carsdirect price and again, it's under invoice.

BMW doesn't go for under invoice routinely. Audi doesn't either. Porsche usually goes for MSRP. If Mercedes were such a beacon for quality and class, would they have to sell their cars for under invoice? We bought a 2003 E320 Sport and got it for $1000 under invoice. That was the first year. Brand new model. The non-sport was going for $2000 under invoice. What brand new luxury model goes for invoice the first year it comes out? We were aware of the bad quality rep of current mercedes cars when we bought, and bought it DESPITE the bad reliability (since it was going to be barely driven; still only has about 7000 miles). You, on the other hand, sound like you want it as your daily driver. I'd definitely make sure it has a warranty on it if you insist on getting one.

I would prefer an Audi A5 to both but should I have to choose between the BMW and Mercedes then I would take the 125 coupe.
