The common assumption is that is was.

However, I've come to the conclusion that the so-called "renaissance" was actually the just the capstone of the Middle Ages.

No, the renaissance is unique because they tried to recapture the greek ideal. Their art and music, and even academics were more in tune with how they imagined the greeks to be. If anything, the renaissances period is one of those periods where the people really felt and thought different- periods like the baroque period or classical period are much more of something that was realized after they happened- but the renaissances period was an active desire to change.

The Renaissance is probably the only "era" that called itself that at the time. All other periods get named retrosprecively.

It's referred to as though it was...and, if you follow its definition, it sure does fit...the Renaissance was the beginning of a lot of things!
