If you signed a lease and it expires soon then expect your rent to be raised unless you live in a government sponsored apartment/house. Landlords usually don't really care, they just want their money. I don't think a letter will help but you can give it a try. If you do, explain to your landlord specifically why for example, your paying a student loan or IRS, going through a divorce etc. Good luck!
