The 2.5 4 cylnder has a belt. The 3.0 H-6 has a chain. The belt should be check every 60,000 miles/96,000 km or every 4 years whichever comes first.

The 2006 Subaru 2.5 liter engine uses a timing belt, not a chain.
I've included a link to Subaru's recommended maintenance schedule below. In that schedule the timing belt is called the "Camshaft drive belt" and Subaru recommneds that it be inspected every 30,000 miles or 30 months (whichever comes first) and that it be replaced at 105,000 miles or 105 months (8 years 9 months). Naturally, your dealer will probably recommended a more frequent replacement interval.

It a belt. Subaru recommends changing it every 100,000 miles but most dealers will say around 70,000 to be safe.
