If a character leaves town, what are the hopes of them returning at some point? My son's practically inconsolable cos he missed his fave character moving.
Are there any ways to get particular characters back?
(I've already looked up plenty of FAQ's & Walkthroughs that mention nothing about this)

Depends. Since there are dozens and dozens of characters, the chance of them moving back on their own would nearly nevver happen. However, if you take some steps, you can easily get him back!
Each person has eight slots where characters move... very confusing to figure out! Basically, if you have wi-fi, see if you can find someone online that has that character, and is willing to give him to you. When that character moves, to to the town of the person. Come back to your town. Then, you should have the character then, or the next day. You can also go DS-to-DS to get them back, by taking the same steps, if you know someone with Animal Crossing:Wild World.
If you don't have wi-fi, and can't go DS-to-DS, then you are pretty much out of luck... sorry.

No, but if he plays a lot and connect a lot with other towns maybe that character comes back. That happen to me but then the character came back.

ive never seen someone move back...they will send letters sometimes though if they were good friends with your sons character. Other than that you can just hope he starts to like a new character... new people will move to his town though.
