What causes a car to stall/stop on a railroad track and fail to start back up again?

Just a guess here.
Static electricity from the rails, which does build up something fierce as a train approaches. It might well be sufficient to fry an alternator or starter on an older vehicle (or the fuel injection circuits on a newer one).
I mean, people get *anti-static* mats for their computers just so they don't build up sparks, and then think nothing of how vehicles (both cars and trains) can build up a charge and then be vulnerable to it (not grounded properly courtesy of the non-pavement material that surrounds some railroad tracks these days).

It is freaky, but its the same thing that causes the people
not to be able to either get out of the vehicles or think to try.
It is believed by some that evil spirits are the cause, brought
on by one of many curses upon the railroad, by either the
Indians who became angry by the buffalo hunters it brought or
the Chinese after so many died building the railways or the
landowners who were forced to sell or were killed or jailed for
saying no to what was considered "Progress" !

coincidence...I personally have a problem with having to think that there is a reason for everything. Besides, even if we knew the reason bad things happen, I think a lot of people wouldn't agree anyway, and the reason would not provide justification. I believe in embracing the mystery in life. Having an answer for something gives you permission to stop thinking about it. I think that living with our questions has the potential to shape us into better people than any answers ever could.
