I am 37 1/2 weeks with my first baby and have been told since 32 weeks that I could have this baby at any time due to a positive fibronectin test. Today I am 1 1/2 cm dilated and 70% effaced. Over the past month I have experienced severe back labor contractions with nausea and leg cramps every so often that range from 20 to 3 minutes apart for a period of up to 4 hours and then they just stop. This has happened about 4 times and we have called the Dr 3 of the times and have been sent to the hospital once with contractions 4 minutes apart just to be sent home an hour later. How many times can I go into labor only to just stop?? My husband and I are both getting very frustrated.

I just saw the Dr today and I am now 3 cm dilated and 80% efaced so she still says it could be any time...when I got home I had severe contractions for 3 hours that had me in tears, but they still weren't consistent and they finally stopped although now I am spotting some which the Dr says is from today's exam. It's nice to know my contractions are moving me along but very frustrating to be in so much pain with absolutely nothing that can be done but be told to sit and wait it out. I'm really just praying my water will break so they can't send me away! Thanks so much to all of you who have answered.

I am so sorry...this is a frustrating experience for you. Have they not even attempted to put you on pitocin or anything like that? With my first pregnancy, I went in and was only dilated a centimeter, and when my contractions started slowing down, they put me on pitocin. Ask your Ob-Gyn how long you're going to have to endure this. Personally, I'd be chewing mine out for sending me to the hospital only to be sent back home. Once again, I am sooooo sorry!

Sorry to tell you but if your Dr is not concerned then your stuck. The good news is that at 37 weeks along there is a good chance that the baby should be just fine when ever she is born! Next time they start try taking a warm shower, drink a BIG glass of water, lay on your left side and stay very calm. That might help stop them if they are not real labor. It helped me some.
I had false labor for 6 weeks before the baby came.
Good luck and God Bless

Oh, I know the frustrations of false labor!!! Even with my 4th baby, I went to the hospital just sure that I was in labor. The contractions kept up for quite awhile and I ended up staying the whole night, but was sent back home.
Imagine, me, with the 4th baby, how embarassed I was. Your body can really play tricks on you!!
You are plenty far along now that your baby could come at any time. If you get worried about it and feel like you're starting up again, you should go back in to the hospital. It never hurts to get checked out. I know it's a booger to be sent home again.

A lot more than you already have. I HATED that part with my first. A couple hints though..drink loads of water and take a walk or lie down-change position from whatever you were doing when they started. TRUE contractions will continue with either method while Braxton Hicks generally will stop with water or a change of position. With my first I had 3 full days of regular contractions 5 minutes apart(her head was in my hip and until she got set down right I just didnt dilate).

I have sympathy for you, and can't answer your question on this, but maybe I can help with the frustration.
I personally go into false labor all the time.
I work for the federal government...and everytime when I am sitting around doing nothing and someone walks by...I look like I am hard at work, but really, I am not.
I call this false labor and it can be done 15-20 times or more a day. Just call any government to witness it firsthand.

I was put on Breathine in my fifth month which I took every 3 hours in a 24 hour period and I was put in bed until my last month. There were many times I ended up in the hospital pre-natal unit and given Breathine injections to stop the contractions. You need to do whatever you have to do to keep that baby inside you for as long as you can.
My prayers are with you - good luck!

I know the frustration of this. I went through it with my first child. More times then I wish to remember, Just don't get so used to having false labor symptoms and really be in labor! That wouldn't be good. It can happen alot. Ther is no magic number. Just try not to get to frustrated, this will put un-needed stress on you and the baby!
Good luck with your little one!

That is weird that you are 3cm and they send you home in my previous pregnancy when I was 3cm they kept me there and if my contractions were not moving along they would give me pitocin to regulate the contraction Don't get frustruted the baby will be here soon!

You have a few weeks to go or the doctor would induce labor. Just try and be patient and remember that each day your baby is growing stronger. When he gets ready to be born, he will!
