How have the presidents of the last 50 years compared with those that preceded them in your opinion?

Going back 50 years means we are looking at Eisenhower forward. To a degree, this is a difficult comparison to make since most of the presidents since World War II have had to be more actively involved in foreign policy than their predecessors. This means that sometimes presidents will get blamed for things that are really beyond their control.

That having been said, I don't think it's fair to say that this is the worst batch of presidents we have had. There were a couple stretches in the 19th century that were particularly bad. The Fillmore-Pierce-Buchanan trio is considered to be about the worst run for its length of time. There's also not a lot of good things to be said about A. Johnson-Grant-Hayes-Arthur either (I left out Garfield as he didn't serve for but six months).

Eisenhower got a bum rap as a do-nothing president, but recent research indicates he may have done more behind the scenes than we were aware of at the time. All the other presidents have their detractors and fans -- most notably G. W. Bush and Clinton. History will probably tell us that, with the exception of Nixon, we have had a run of average to above-average presidents.
