What are two reasons why cells divide rather than continue to grow indefinetly?

Cells will not survive if they get to be too large. Several reasons:
1. Diffusion cannot happen fast enough to support the needs of a large cell. Materials will not enter or leave the interior parts of the cell fast enough.
2. The DNA cannot be copied fast enough to support the protein synthesis needs of a large cell. This is similar to the situation where one teacher is enough for a class of 15, but not enough for a class of 60.
3. The surface area to volume ratio is smaller in a larger cell. The surface area does not increase as quickly as the volume, so a larger cell does not have enough plasma membrane to exchange enough molecules/materials for the cell to prosper.

ECOLINK, is correct.

but the major reason is 3. surface area to volume ratio is too small.
