I have a Honda Civic 2005. Occasionally, when I slow down I feel the engine is like shutting down then come on back up. The whole thing lasts <1 second.

Another thing is when I start the car in the cold morning, the exhaust gas smell pretty bad, like gasoline.

What could be the problem?

i own a repair shop, and it sounds like you have a bad 0-2 sensor on it,that will make it run a little rich on gas like that, you can take it by any auto zone and have them scan it for free, and they can tell you if it has any bad sensors on it that might cause this, its free, all its going to cost you is the time to take it to them, and they probably have the needed part to repair it with also, good luck i hope this help,s.

What you feel is transmission - apparently auto - downshifting. This is perfectly fine. Actually, this feature is almost unique to Honda trans.
With gas smell cold - this is normal too. Until the engine warms up, it requires rich mixture to run. For the first 30 or so seconds, emissions control system is not functional because O2 sensors that provide feedback to the on-board computer are not operational until they are hot. In order to accelerate that process, all newer vehicles ('96+) have electric heaters incorporated into the sensors.

Take the car in to the dealer mechanics for a solution . The car is still too new to be having problems.
