Okay when George Lucas was making the first Star Wars movie (Ep IV) he realized that there was all this back story he had to tell. Because his production team had to invent technology just to get the first movie released, he knew he'd have to table the back story for the time being until the technology could catch up to his vision. So the story was released out of sequence with a sixteen year gap between Ep. VI and Ep. I (Return of the Jedi and Phantom Menace respectively) Because of studio commitments and budget concerns, George and company went ahead with the saga from when they started with Luke, Leia, and Han Solo to the supposed end. Years later, when he felt it was time to revisit the galaxy far far away, he started at the beginning of the saga. Try watching Eps. I through VI sometime. You'll kill an entire day, but it's kind of fun watching the story unfold as it was meant to.

Because Star Wars was book 4 of I believe a 9 book series, so what we know as Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi is not 1 2 3 its actually 4 5 6 and Episode 1 is actually book 1 of the series. Supposedly there will be a 7 8 9 but we shall see

Lucas is full of it. Here is what happened: Lucas and the film studio took a gamble on this odd little idea called Star Wars. It was never expected that it would go beyond 1 flick.

Star Wars turned into the first ultra super mega hit of modern times. So George, knowing a good thing when he sees it, said 'Hey, let's make some more of these movies so we can all become gazillionaires'. Thus the trilogy was born - Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. Of course George had to go forward in time to follow the Star wars story to it's end. Starting with Star Wars, and then going back in time would turn everybody off.

So, after Return of the Jedi, George gets to thinking - 'Hey, I could become a quadrilliongazillionaire if I make 3 more movies.' So, George makes another 3 movies about the times leading up to the movie - Star Wars. Unfortunately, by this time, George has complete artistic control and so he takes a good story and screws it all up with odd-ball time-lines and contradictions from one flick to the next. Then he hires some really awful actors (though some of them were good mind you) to act off of a really awful script and - viola - the 1st 3 flicks become barely coherent special effects snippets strung together to make a really bad movies.

well mr lucas the creater he made star war a new home, empire strikes back and return of the jedi first. then in 1999 or 2000 he decided to make the other the episode that tells the story of lukes father. so pretty much the new star wars are the prequel.

The ORGINAL trilogy was done first as a way to give hope and show good triumph over evil. Lucas left the first 3 chapters open in case he ever wanted to go back, as he ended up doing to explain how Vader came to be.

I read somewhere that George Lucas didn't want to make the first three until the technology was advanced enough to create the vision he had for it. I'm glad he waited. Episode III was just amazing!

I believe that he wanted to implant the idea that Vader was Luke's father. And show how good triumphs over evil. I also think that he wanted to eventually tel the story (in three parts), of how Vader came to be. And how Luke is Vader's son.

they did the older episodes w/out thinking that they were going to ever do the last three (the most recent) if u want to watch in order it would go in numerical order (look at the episode #s)

It's very complicated and I can't get into the specifics, but the person who filmed our jedi misions lost most of his film. He didn't find it til after I "died". I didn't really die, but that's a whole other story.
