When I was a child I didn't make the box itself but I made it my own by glueing items that were special to me onto the box (just an ordinary wooden box). I still have it to this day and it is very specail to me.

I have several books on making boxes, all using mostly wood. In your case, I would think you need to determine what medium you plan to use, i.e., paper mache', wood, cardboard, etc.
I personally enjoy using wood because of the versatility and durability that wood offers. I can use contrasting woods for special effect, and the designs are limitless.
You can do a search on the internet and come up with a host of websites that discuss jewelry/keepsake boxes. This will help you decide what type of box you want to make, and what purpose it will serve. I was addicted to box-making for a couple of years and made special boxes for my children to keep jewelry and other keepsakes. I integrated wood-burning, intarsia, and wood inlays to get special effects.
In my opinion, box-making is a world with infinite possibilites, and great rewards when making the special ones. Do some research and then decide on what you want to do...it's well worth the effort to define your goals and ideas.
good luck

I make boxes and hatboxes using thin cardboard that I attach fabric to (after it's been cut to size) with a fusible web like Stitch Witchery. Then I glue the pieces together with a small overlap.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/cmbij
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

Go to your craft store and buy a paper mache box with lid. They come in round, square, heart shaped. Use cloth, paint, or pictures to decoupage; or all 3. Line the bottom with a piece of felt.
