There are hostels in venice, but not very cheap, and none of them are on boats. If you want cheap hostels or hotels try nearby Padua (Padova in Italian). It is large city of about 1 million people, one of those hidden treasures of Italy, very beautiful with quite a bit to see and it's only 1/2 hour by train to venice, verona, vicenza, ferrara, rovigo, and treviso, about one hour to bologna, 1.5 hour to milan, and 2 hours to florence. In all, if you want to see venice and it's surrounding area, Padua is a great place to stay because of it's location, size, and cost!

Sleeping on a boat ( if it exists ) is probably not wise as the canals stink. Good luck in finding one ... but I'd recommend staying in low cost accommodation near to a place of your choice in Venice. Here's some ideas:

i dont think so. here is your best bet for a low cost: stay in thenearby city of Padova(aka Padua) you can find a nice hotel for half the price of a crap hotel in venice. padua is a very nice town with good restaraunts and a lot of history. then you take the train into venice. the train ride is about 30 mins. this is definatley your best option.

There are no vessels large enough perminently berthed in Venice.
All the canal side berths are for Vaporetto, taxis and delivery/service boats.

The only place with enough space gets up to 7 cruisers a day plus ferries the main islands are only 4.5km across.
