I find the material interesting, and it's definitely understandable. I don't study in a very distracting setting, but in the end I still feel like most of the stuff just escapes me for some reason. Are there any study tips you guys can give?

Well, you could force yourself away from distractions, which usually doesn't work (personal experience)

I usually go to a nice quiet spot, such as my local library or Starbucks, you'll get a lot done, and you'll be happy with your working efficiency.

Good Luck!

When I went back to college after many years, I had the same problem. I had to relearn how to learn. I found a video that really helped me. It's called "Where there's a will, there's a way" I got a copy from the local library. It had all sorts of tips on how to memorize, how to get more accomplished in a shorter time and much, much more. I have given this as a gift and lent my own copy out over and over. I even did a study skills seminar based on this tape for nontraditional and returning college students. It helped many people , I know. I guess the one thing that helped me most was finding a spot that was my study spot. I made sure that I had everything that I might need (pencils ,pens, paper, stapler dictionary ,thesaurus, something to drink ,a clock, etc. you'll find out what you need. Every time that I had to study I went to this same spot. I did nothing else there (no paying bills, checking mail, etc.)
I found after a very short time that going to that same spot every time seemed to put me in study mode. It worked for me but I used all sorts of suggestions from the video that I mentioned. The second most helpful thing that I learned was to highlight and take notes about what I was studying as I read it. After the reading was done, I could go back through my notes and highlighted items and make new notes from those . Each time I did this, my notes would be shorter because I never made a note on something once I understood it. At the point that I knew something (just from repetition often), I no longer needed to study it. Once you have it, you have it. It made cramming for exams alot easier, too. Good luck and happy studying.

Study for 20 minutes...then take a break (walk, call someone etc..) and then sorta quiz yourself (lame i know) to see if you acutally remebered anything.
Take notes also maybe...writing helps info stick
Studying with someone also helps...just make sure they arent distracting.
Listen to classical music.
Take a short nap
