Start 1st by seeing if the odometer is working, if that works ok, but the speedo still isn't, you will need to have the IP cluster removed and sent out to a factory repair shop.( the speed sensor feeds both the odometer and speedometer, so if one is working, you just ruled out a bad sensor) If neither are working, odometer and speedometer, you are going to need to get a factory manual and trouble shoot it. It could be then the speed sensor, wiring, PCM, BCM or the cluster itself, Good luck

You already have legit suggestions. One note: check engine light may not come on on a poorly built vehicle even if there is a malfunction. They do that to avoid too many frustrated customers and excessive warranty expenses. In other words, do not exclude a possibility of a bad speed sensor.

I agree with mrauto, but i also think if it were a bad speed sensor you would also have a check engine light. I am leaning toward a cluster problem.
