When you land you put some sudden load on your knees back and legs if you bend your knees it tends to lessen the shock.

If you didn't bend the legs, the shock of hitting the floor would go up you legs and into your hip all at once. (Well, maybe it would take a 100th of a second.)

By bending the knees, you give the leg muscles more time to absorb the shock. That way, you don't bruise the bones.

Gravity. If your legs do not bend, they would likely break. Yes that is true. Every square inch of air around you is 14 lb's, coupled with the speed that you're falling at from jumping off the table, the body compensates for all the pressure by bending at the joints to cushion the fall. That's why your feet will hurt after falling from heights.

You are letting the large muscles and springy tendons of your thighs and calves absorb the kinetic energy of your body that must be arrested by the impact.

You could severely damage your knees if you kept them locked for even a relatively low jump from a table to the floor.

Since this is the physics category I assume you want a physics answer and not a practical one.

The physics answer is that by bending your knees you decrease the rate of deceleration (or negative acceleration) when you land. That decreases the force which the floor exerts on your body (equal and opposite reaction, F=ma) which decreases the chance of injury and pain.

To absorb the shock. If you landed with stiff legs the force would be uncomfortable or even cause injury.

To absorb the shock. Kinda like cars' shockbreakers. If not, you'd injured you knee or your back.

your knees bend because you body is absorbing the energy from the ground and the fall. by bendin the knees it makes impact less on the body and easier on everything!

It distributes the force of gravity across your body as equally as possible to minimize shock.

My guess is that it is to help your legs to better absorb the shock so they won't be damaged.
