I have A LOT of music in my Windows Media Player, and I like to try to keep it organized. However, I have problems with Genre. Could you give me some genres and sub-genres, explanations, and examples of each? (For example, a sub-genre of rock would be indie rock. You would explain how you can tell indie rock, and give a few well-known or fairly well-known artists or songs as examples.)

Progressive Rock- Rush, Smashing Pumpkins, King Crimsons, etc
Alternative Rock- R.E.M, Nirvana(also grunge), Pearl Jam(also grunge), Alice and Changes, Rage Against the Machines.
Metal- Black Sabbath, Dio, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Sanctuary etc
Thrash Metal- Megadeth, Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax, Exodus, Testament.
Death Metal/Black Metal-Death, Morbid Angel, Possessed, Venom, Mayhem, Behemoth, Burzum etc
