This may sound snotty (and really it's not intended to)...but when it comes to your children you just have to, period. Before I had kids I smoked and during both pregancies I quit. And looking back now it's the easiest way to ensure your child's health. If you consult your doctor about this there are (depending on where you live) some government funded programs that offer medications, patches, gums ect. to aid in quitting. Good luck!

QuitNet.com. That place helps a lot. Great support site, and it's free. (Unless you choose to take the premium service. The free service works very well, tho.) Saved my life and I quit a very heavy smoking habit.

Also, there's the patch, the nicotine gum, chantix, the inhaler, the lozenge. And don't say that these are too expensive. If you're not buying cigs, you can afford these instead. There are even generic forms of these available. Cost less, and work just as well. You have a better chance of keeping a quit if you use these aids (EXACTLY as the directions on the packaging says to do.)

There's Wellbutrin and Zyban (same drug) that your doctor might prescribe for you.

But go, right now, to QuitNet, and join. On that site, I recommend the QuitStop forum for the most help for starting a quit.

There is also a new pill on the market that is prescription that is more effective than Wellbutrin and Zyban. It's called Chantix and since your infertility Dr wants you to quit smoking he'd probably write you a prescription for it.

It's about $120/month at Wal-Mart and you take it for three months to 6 months, depending on how long you need it. Compared to cigs and the patches it's affordable, and some insurance companies are paying for it because of its high success rate compared to Zyban (no insurance companies were paying for Zyban when it was first introduced to the market).

Everyone that I've talked to on Chantix is doing well on it and is having no cravings whatsoever. It just takes that initial 'ok, I'm ready to quit smoking and this is how i'm going to do it' drive.
oh, and Chantix is in pregnancy class C, so it's ok to take it during pregnancy - but I wouldn't take it longer than you had to.

Good luck to you!

As a TTC'er as well and told to quit smoking after having two normal, healthy and big babies -12 and 14 putting me at a high risk age...I did a step down with cigarettes at first, stopping mine all together and grabbing here and there my DH'S - I did menthol he does OLD GOLD..OMG...and then I stopped that and did the patch during the days and tolerate it at night...now I do not smoke at all...You have to think about HOW much you want this baby ...I find it to be more unbearable then giving birth, but I had to find it in myself to say I am stronger then this and I want to have a baby.
Also tons of support on the web...google "quit smoking forums" and see what you can come up with.

Have you tried the gums/patches and everything else out there that they have? They even have support groups out there...there really is no easy answer for this. Just know that it is for a good cause and will be worth it in the end!

members of my family who smoked had the best success by using the patch plus xanax, prescribed by doctor.

What's more important? Smoking or showing your husband how much you love him by giving him the greatest gift you can?
