When I leave home and university I want a pet, a low maintinance pet, so should I have a Rat or a Bird?
I will also hopefully be a nurse so I want a pet that will be happy by itself for hours.

I think a rat would be easier to upkeep than a bird, and think the rat would do better alone. (unless you get two rats) When you are home you can spend some quality time with the rat as they are quite cuddly..you will be able to let him out of the cage and interact with you. You might not be able to interact as much with a bird.

birds are social animals- you never want to leave it alone for a long time. They will get loud, squawk, and usually pluck themselves from the stress.
A rat is a lot better animal to leave alone. As long as they have a wheel and some toys, they can be entertained for hours.

You really should not be getting a pet if you do not have time for it.

Rats are social animals, so if you decide on rats, get at least two of the same sex. Besides, that way they will be able to keep each other company while you're gone.

A rat, because birds can get lonely unless they're in pairs.

You shouldn't get any pet if you aren't going to be around to play with them.
