But if it's a 4.4 Liter engine; isn't it supposed to use around 4 1/2 quarts of oil?

4.4 liters refers to the total volume of the cylinders and not to the crank case oil capacity.

no BMW's normally use a lot of oil. Any where from 6-9 quarts is normal. a gm 2.8 iter takes 4.5 quarts and a 2.2 liter takes 4 1/4 quarts. My piont is that liter size and oil capacity have nothing to do with each other. and most european cars take more oil than american vehicles.

You should check the dipstick and see how much oil shows. You should find anothe '02 Escort and compare dipsticks- maybe the dealer has one on the lot for sale. For the shaking: make sure the hamfist at Walmart didn't knock a sparkplug wire loose or pull off a vacuum hose so they can get you to come back for work you don't need because they messed something up and can cheat you out of some money.

There isn't a car engine around that I am aware of that takes less than five quarts of oil. My truck has a v8 Hemi and it takes 7 quarts of oil.

You are more than likely correct. A 4.4L V8 typically takes between 4 and 5 QT of oil.

Are you sure it says 7.9QT of oil and not 7.9PT or 7.9pints of oil?

Anyways the safest thing to do is
1. When you do an oil change check how much oil comes out of the crankcase.
2. When you fill it back up, check the dipstick constantly. Place 4 QT of oil in and check dipstick every 1/2 QT after that.
