Is it possible for a baby who has absolutely no physical characteristics of Down's Syndrom to have it?! She is almost 10 weeks old, in the 50-75th percentile in all growth catagories, extremely alert, and very social. Her pediatritian is constantly telling us how she is amazed by my daughters strength, alertness, and progress. She holds her head up rather steady when placed on her belly, she lifts her bottom half of her body, and she has began to start to roll over from front to back (she would get it too if she could figure out how to place her arm). The reason I ask is because her grandfather is convinced that she needs to be tested because she usually sticks her tounge out all the time. If it were an issue wouldn't you think that her pediatrician would have noticed it by now... seeing as my daughter has seen her doctor more than she has seen her grandfather?!

Im not worried about her sticking her tounge out... i love it and think it is adorable. I was just very hurt by my father suggesting that... especially because while telling me this he made a comment about me being a young mother... Like just becuase I am 19 and married I am an idiot and don't know when there is something wrong w/ my daughter.

Tell her grandfather to put a sock in it. You would have known before she was born with the triple test. Babies will stick out there tongues often.. they are developing taste buds. It is quiet normal. If you are concerned and would like to hush the grandfather.. call the doctor and ask her about this. Do not stress over this and enjoy your little one every step of the way.

I had a nuchal translucency ultrasound done when I was 12w 3d. They measure the fold at the back of the baby's neck. Anything under 3mm is normal. Mine was 1mm. I also had a blood test done at the same time which tested the likelihood of my baby having downsyndrome. The results came back as not at increased risk of having down syndrome (chance of 1 in 10,000)

tell you grandfather that he is wrong. both of my kids rolled over early and was able to keep there head up early in fact the day my second child came home he was holding his head up and holding in place and trying to roll over. my youngest every time he trys to do something he sticks his tounge out.and they were very very alert both of my children still to this day They will notice things that we missed there could be tiny specks of crumbs on the floor and he would see them. Your daughter is fine. both my kids have done this. and they are normal actually they are too darn smart for there age. She is just smart that is all. You should be proud not worried. My kids are 4 and 18 months.
i hope this clears your mind

I seriously wouldn't worry. Yes the pediatrician would know by now if your daughter had Down's syndrome, in fact, they would probably have known by the time she was discharged from the hospital at birth.

Tell her grandfather that she sticks her tongue out all the time because she looks cuter that way.

to put your mind at ease perhaps you should mention this to your health visitor or doctor and if they agree get your daughter checked. I was under the impression (being a mum of 3 myself) that abnormalties like downs is normally picked up just after birth and if not before 10 weeks of age, but i could be out of date. If your babe is so alert and thiriving try not to worry too much but for peace of mind contact someone who can help properly

I am sure it is possible but...

sounds like the old man is messing with you!

Sounds strange I know, but my father kept saying weird things like that too when my first was a baby. I have talked to other moms who have said the same thing. Our dads weren't as involved as men are these days, and they are certainly behind the times on warning signs. Now with the arrival of grand babies they are nervous and trying be involved and want to help... Bring it up with your DR if you want to eliminate the possibility, but I think your daughter is fine!

If she is alert and doing everything a "normal" baby does then she does not have downs. You would be able to tell if she had downs or not there are certain characteristics that all downs kids have.

Her grandfather is a dork, at least on this issue. You should not let his strange ideas worry you in the least. Down's would have been suspected at least by the delivery and chromosome tests would have taken place already.

She would not be holding her head up if she had downs. Kids with downs have very poor muscle tone.
