I often practice alone. I have tryouts tomorrow and i need to know if there are any good practice drills i can do by myself. I have been doing soft toss and hitting the balls into a fence. Anything else? (anything good for hitting and feilding)

Also, what do most high school coaches look for in tryouts?

highschool coaches look at a number of things. obviously they look at ability. they also talk good long looks at attitude, hustle, potential, coachability, and being able to mold a player. at the age range of a highschool player, hustle and attitude has a lot to do with making the squad because you are still at an age where they can help improve you. they do not however want to teach fundamentals so make sure you are fundamentally sound. making each play and making it "look good" are a big thing they are looking for because a good highschool coach can make a good player, a great player. if you are practicing alone, practice your swing infront of a mirror, practice your fielding technique in front of a mirror, i.e. one step, two step and field, plant and throw

all I can say is that our HS coach emphasized hitting, if you could swing a bat well - then there was a place for you. Now I didn't hit well, but was one of the best infielders on the team so still got playing time. Of course if you throw hard with a curve to go along with that fastball, then you have a good shot. I did one thing as self practice, tennis ball off of the garage door, pitching motion, ending up in fielding position, trying to throw the ball hard enough to get it by myself. Start at one side of driveway, throw to middle of door and run across fielding ball coming up to make throw back to middle. Prob why I was much better fielder. If you have an old tire to hang from tree or rafter in garage, swing bat and hit this - it will build up the forearms. Hit off of tee if possible.

Some batting cages have a softball pitching machine so you could practice there.
