Don't tell me to stick with XP because I've never used XP. I still use Windows 98. So I need to upgrade, but how long should I wait until all the Vista bugs are worked out?

Buy it anytime you are ready...
I cannot believe all this nonsense about waiting for it to get "fixed".

It is as stable as any other version of Windows, AND when patches, or service packs are necessary all it takes is a simple online update.

People who bought XP on the original CD do not have a lesser version or license than people who bought the SP2 CD released a year or so later ....
All they do is click on "Windows Update" & it's done .

It's not like buying a car ... it's software, & patches & updates & service packs will be a fact of life for a long long time to come.

Anyone who is waiting for the perfect Windows that will never need a patch or an update is dreaming ...

I do not wish to seem disrepectful or arrogant, however, I frequent this forum regularly & CANNOT get over how many people keep suggesting that we wait on Vista because it's flawed or incomplete...
THERE WILL ALWAY BE UPDATES.

FYI ... I am not addressing you directly, but all the ones who led you to believe that nonsense.
A busines has various reasons for waiting ... reasons that do not apply to a consumer. Consumers can turn on a dime.
A business that just upgraded 500 PCs to Vista cannot... They have to move cautiously, justified or not.

A rule of thumb in the IT world is to wait for the Service Pack 1 release. This has historically been 8 to 12 months after the OS comes out, though you never know.

I'm testing vista right now for my office and while it looks cool - it still has flaws. If you're running 98 though my friend, you will be in better shape with Vista as it is now than keeping 98. Just being on the internet you are susceptible to being exploited. If you do wait, make sure you have a firewall between you and the internet. If you don't, you'll probably be fine -- Microsoft makes their patches and service packs available for free.

Also, FYI - it is always a good idea to keep a backup of your data, no matter what operating system you run. My advice to you is to go for the upgrade now. The Core 2 processors just came out so that won't change for the foreseeable future and all vista patches will be free.

That is unless you're open to getting a mac, that's cool too.

Well since your still on prehistoric 98 i would say go ahead and get Vista now, nothing can be as bad as 98 is.
But if you were a XP user I would tell you to wait about 6 more months, i have had Vista on my laptop for about 2 months and there is a quite a bit of things that just dont work correctly with Vista yet, i would say in about 4-6 months more vendors will have updated software and hardware that will work better with Vista. Dont get me wrong though, if your just doing basic stuff like email, internet etc.. then you shouldnt have a issue with Vista, but if your doing more advanced things such as VPN, Citrix etc.. then Vista is a bad choice at the moment.

Also Microsoft Office 2007 is a wonderful addition to Vista or even XP, i have been using Office 2007 also for about 2 months and have had 0 problems with it.

There quite no subject matters with Vista after the launch of SP1.i take advantage of it for 2 years.ignore with regard to the obdurate those who refuse to divorce XP. As for domicile windows 7,i tried a replica for 30 days and it is domicile windows Vista with some minor variations. the stressful UAC has now decrease settings, that gruesome sidebar is optionally accessible, you've a image on defragment, there are some seen additions and the computer is more beneficial consumer pleasant.besides the undeniable fact that the middle is Vista,so bypass ahead get Vista and also you'll continually improve later, domicile windows 7 have an similar criteria as Vista

i heard that vista had tons of bugs so wait maybe about a year, right now i heard that XP is working better than vista, so maybe just upgrade to XP and wait for vista because XP is an excellent software and it works great.

6 months. That is enough time for the major bugs to show and get some updates out.

I'd hold off for six months to let Microsoft get the first Service Pack out.
