i saw it several times today where they just sent it back to their D and changed when they were on an odd man rush. They gave up some pretty good chances too

That is their very boring, yet successful defensive style hockey they have displayed for years. They don't have the second lowest goals against in the league for nothing.

If you take your odd man rush down one way, yes you get a good chance to score. But if you don't score, it frequently can lead to a odd man rush the other way, which will score. A good chance to score - but carries risk. A power play carries less risk. You will find some lines, like your top line, will have a green light and some a red light to break out. In a defensive line, probably more likely the 3rd and 4th line, they will have a red light.

Sometimes it is just time for a line change, they are tired out there. Again, the risk is even worse. Take a tired odd man rush down one way. Less likely to score as you are tired, and give up an odd man rush the other way, and you are all too tired to get back into the play.

Does this mean I think they should play this style? Hell no!!

The devils are finding every way to keep hockey in the dirt that they can there a good time but they use every rule gap that they can everything the the strike put in place they go against. They will find out the NHL has changed and within a few years they will have to change or they will not be at the top anymore.

it kind of works the same way as changing your line after you dump the puck in, but they're trying to time it so they can get a shot on the goal and hopefully have a fresh guy rebound the puck in. If they don't score then they atleast have a fresh line while the opposing team is still tiring, or they're changing their line when they're supposed to be on the defensive.

Because that's the safest time to change.

If you were watching the Tampa Bay/NJ game, that wasn't a good game for the Devils. By the time they got out of their zone they were tired and needed a change.

It's all part of New Jersey's effort to kill the game once and for all.
