i would think baseball, horse racing and golf

Horse racing, including harness racing, was the most popular. Baseball had just been invented and wasn't widespread. I don't think football had started yet, but polo was beginning (limited to the upper class). Cricket and soccer were popular in England.

In the American West it was horse racing and rodeo.
