I did this in my younger days, but I was very cautious not to offend anyone in a public setting. This would go for straights as well in my opinion.

girls are raised to smile at compliments, flattery & such. take it slow or pull her to the side & ask about it in a joking way. this way if she says she's not gay you can laff it off
