The white shirt will not have the brightness that it would have if done in the white wash. Black no matter if it doesn't run, still gives off some of its color, that is why eventually after washing a black shirt a lot it will look dull. Whites should be washed separately, so you can add some bleach to get all the stains out and to give then a glow.

Some black shirts are colorfast and they won't affect a white shirt in the same load. But some other black shirts will bleed, and they can make white clothes look dull or even gray.

if the black shirt is brand new it might bleed and get on the white shirt.
