Jesus is not making a new law. All people are already called to love their neighbor as themselves. We, however, have a way of justifying and rationalizing our behavior and motives. Jesus, by saying turn the other cheek, is pointing out what loving one's neighbor looks like. When someone hits us, is our immediate reaction "what response would be the best benefit to the person that hit me?" Who does that? Who truly is so selfless that he/she doesn't have a first reaction of anger at having been disrespected? The saying wakes us up to the fact that not just the person who struck us, but we, ourselves are unable to live properly in this world. We need redemption. We cannot fix ourselves. We need Jesus to give us a new heart, a new core, a new birth. We need to be reunited with the source of all love - Jesus. Note: If we do turn the other cheek it should not be timid, but confident. And unfortunately, even turning the other cheek is problematic -- What do you bet when we turn the other cheek, one is thinking "See, I'm turning the other cheek. I'm better than you." True, pure love is a hard thing to come by in this world. -- 'Makes a person truly appreciate what Jesus did for us on Good Friday. Exceptions: sometimes its better for our neighbor that we do not turn the other cheek and stand up to him/her. A good example of this is the school bully. Of course in our desire not to turn the other cheek would we then view nearly everyone who hurts us as a bully that needs to be resisted, so ... let wisdom prevail.
