My male teddy bear hamster has been sleeping a little more lately. He sleeps until pretty late, then he gets up and starts to explore his cage, and run in his wheel. He also resently got bit by my female, but it looks fine. Why might this be or is it pretty normal? He acts fine when he is awake.I think all hamsters are different, and this is just his life style,am I right?Help.

He sounds like a normal hamster just doing what hamsters do. I don't see any reason for alarm. If his wound didn't seem to be infected then he is fine. Only if he acts sickley take him to the vet. He's just living the hamster dream. No worries with the biting females are like that. Nothing out of the ordenary here. But its good to see someon who cares enough to be worried at a slight change. Your a good owner. Hope this helped!

Syrian hamsters, which are the kind that you have, are solitary animals and yours need to be separated. You have already seen the fighting begin. You need to separate them immediately. It is normal for hamsters to kill one another when forced to live together. If you don't believe me and my first hand experience, just browse other questions and answers here on Yahoo.

There are a few things that could be causing him to sleep a bit longer. First, he could be injured by the female. I know of many hamsters that had a wound heal only to have an infection spreading on the inside. Get him is own cage.

Another thing could be the temperature. Syrian hamsters can hibernate at only 60 degrees. With the daylight hours being shorter and the temperature dropping, these are a signs telling the hamster to instinctually decrease activity.

One more reason is that the female has reached her sexual maturity. Syrians are solitary and territorial. If the male begins to move about the cage, which your female considers to be her territory, he will be attacked. He has just learned to "lay low". It is completely unnatural for them to live together and is causing stress on both of them.

It sounds like pretty standard hamster behavior as long as it is not accompanied by any other symptoms, such as a dirty bottom, heavy breathing, eating and drinking more or less than usual, etc. Also you should definetly seperate the male and female not only can they reproduce at a very fast rate they could hurt or kill each other and biting is the first sign of this. You should seperate immediatley.
Good Luck

some hamsters tend to sleep longer when its cold kind of like hibernating but this can also just be your hamsters sleep schedule you may not noticce that hes up running around when your sleeping or out of the house
