It usually means they rushed to launch their web site and, like thousands of other web companies and startups these days, feel like it's trendy and in-the-know to slap "beta" on their site logo...

I'm being partially facetious, but it's seriously over done these days to put "beta" on a web site. Particularly silly are the people who feel it necessary to do closed betas where you can't even see what the site is about.

Betas can last forever. Some major sites (Google and Yahoo! for example) have had products in beta for years. Peekvid will probably open up again in a few months, but when it says "beta," you just never know.

Good luck.

Anything in "beta" typically means its in a testing stage, many pieces of software and websites typically have a beta testing period to make sure all the kinks and bugs are worked out before it goes "live".
Typically beta testing can range from a couple weeks (websites) to a year or more (Microsoft Office 2007)...

Beta means that they are only trying it to see if the users will like it or not

or to see what improvement the users need or want

also to see the users feedback about it

after a period of time they will launch the official one with all improvements required

It means that it is in development. It is nearly finished, but they are still working out the bugs.
