I'm asking mostly Americans, but others, please reply if you want. Which (English-speaking) accent do you find the most difficult to understand and WHY???: (Southern (Sub-categories: Eastern South, central South [New Orleans], Southwestern, California, Midwestern, Upper Midwestern, Middle-Atlantic (sub-category: New York/New Jersey), New England (sub-categories: Northern [Maine/VT/NH], Mass., Conn.)? Feel free to add your OWN "category".

Personally, I have a hard time with Southern Mississippi/Alabama & Florida accents, and I'm pretty good with accents, not only from this country but in the known English-speaking world! (Including New Zealand, the Caribbean and India).

NOTE: This question is for fun ONLY, not for trashing other groups!!!

Gullah accents in South Carolina are darned near impenatrable.

However, for an overall region, I would argue that New York/New Jersey accents are very difficult, mostly because it's rapid fire andn staccato, yet is spoke as if the mouth is filled with marbles. In England, the same is true of Manchester. Those folks might as well be speaking Swahili as far as I'm concerned.

Midwest, California, West, and Middle Atlantic have become so homogenized it's really difficult to notice much difference. However, I must say that the Wisconsin/Illinois accent is really grating because of the way they pronounce the short "a."

Southerners on the other hand, are quite lyrical. Their accents are very musical. Almost like Ireland.

The most difficult for me is the dialect on Tangier Island in Virginia. It's like a foreign language.

The Cajun accent. Amusing, but incredibly hard to understand.

You find Southern drawl hard to understand? Interesting.
